Sustainability
- Universal Paper (UP) employees planted indigenous trees in our very own park at Universal Paper & Plastics (UPP) HQ.
- The park is filled with over 85 trees, with a large variety of species.
- The park and its trees provide employees a reprieve from the sun, and a place to rest.
- The flourishing park is a reminder of how we need to take care of our ecosystem for future generations.
- Our first foray into renewable energy was our phase 1 Solar PV plant.
- The power generation capacity from the 3197 × 545 Wp (Watt peak) panels used, tops out at a significant 1.74 MW (1740 kW).
- Dependency on the Eskom grid has been reduced by 14%.
- Our second phase of renewable energy was quickly implemented after we realised the benefits of phase 1.
- An additional 1.49 MW of power generation capacity was added to the system with the installation of a further 2614 x 570 Wp panels.
- Dependency on the Eskom grid has been further reduced by 11%, now supplementing electricity usage with 25% renewable energy.
Sher Park

For the 2022 Arbor Day, UP decided to use the opportunity to go the extra mile and turn it into Arbor Week by planting 85 trees in our own personal “little” park.
Our amazing employees came in teams, and others as brave individuals to plant these babies. Each one put in the time and effort to ensure that they left a true legacy behind – a tree that would provide a reprieve from the sun, a place to rest, as well as contributing to a more sustainable future and bigger ecosystem for plants, birds, insects, and little critters.
Renewable Energy
At Universal Paper, we are committed to sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint, while maintaining our production efficiency and high-quality standards.
In 2022, we began our renewable energy journey with Phase 1 of our solar panel installation project. By March 2022, we successfully completed Phase 1, which included our paper manufacturing plant and parts of our converting plant, allowing a grid-dependency reduction of 14%. An additional reduction of 11% was implemented with the completion of Phase 2 in July 2023. Renewable energy now supplements our electricity usage with a remarkable 25%.
